Okay… I’ve never responded to one of these because, like doing my taxes, I find this to be a baffling ordeal. But, I’m going to give it a shot.
- Choose a 19th century author
- Post three to nine quotes from that author
- Nominate three to six other bloggers
First, thanks to Raynotbradbury for the nomination. She has a unique and compelling style of fiction when she gets going. I enjoy modernists and so, it follows, that I enjoy her work. She also reviews books from time to time. I’ve purchased one, but haven’t read it, so all I can say is that she’s a pretty good salesperson…
First, I’m supposed to choose and author I like from the 19th century. Three came to mind: Herman Melville, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Charles Dickens. Dickens would be the easiest way to mine pithy quotes; but, I’ve never mined pith. I decided on Melville because I think, on an international level, he’s more obscure than Dostoevsky. So…
Yet habit… strange thing! What cannot habit accomplish?
We cannot live for ourselves. A thousand threads connect us to our fellow man.
A whale-ship was my Yale and my Harvard.
Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.
Truth is in things, not in words.
And, my favorite: To the last, I grapple with thee; from Hell’s heart I stab at thee; for hate’s sake, I spit my last breath at thee.
My nominees are:
Deb Whittam. Still my favorite blogger on WordPress, but that could change if I don’t see more wombat photos…
Aphorisms: Simply adages but insightful and direct.
Patti at Wednesday’s Child: She’s a solid prose writer and I’m curious as to what author she’d choose.
And, Jack Shalom: Just because I like his style…
lol you are awesome in a way…that you are very quick too :)) haha let me check what you posted now…

Thank you so much for the nomination! I will get to this one as soon as possible. Loved YOUR quotes, especially “Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian.” Also visited (and am now following Deb Whittam) and left a comment on your hilarious guest-writer blog. Laughed ‘til I cried…thanks for that, too 😊

Sheep are a fertile subject. It started as captions….but Deb told me she didn’t care how it was arranged; so, I made an essay out of them.

Aren’t there any 19th century authors who talked about wombats…?

No idea but I am at a real disadvantage here – my library is 400km away, so you might get quotes from songs at this rate. 😟

Patti, the link doesn’t pull anything up. Does it when you click on it?
